Getting Started

To drive legally in Illinois, you must have a valid driver’s license, instruction permit, Restricted Driving Permit or Judicial Driving Permit.

The first step to getting you behind the wheel in the State of Illinois is to obtain an instruction permit. To receive an Illinois instruction permit, individuals must appear in person at a driver services facility (you can find the nearest facility here: Facility Finder) and provide acceptable form of identification to prove name, date of birth, Illinois residency, Social Security number and signature for comparison.

When you apply for your instruction permit, you must pass the vision screening and the appropriate written test for the classification you are seeking. The instruction permit is valid for 12 months and must be carry at all time during your driving classes. Need more information: Click Here

The Written Test

The questions for the basic written exam are taken from the information provided in the Illinois Rules of The Road booklet. View Here

The exam requires you to:

  • 1. Identify traffic signs by shape, color or symbol
  • 2. Identify signals and pavement markings
  • 3. Answer multiple choice and true/false questions about traffic laws, safety rules, accident prevention and vehicle equipment
